By undertaking this course, you will gain the appropriate knowledge and skill sets, along with both generic and specific competencies required to become a Justice of the Peace and/or a Commissioner for Declarations. Upon completion you will be able to register with the Justice department to become qualified to volunteer in your community with the provision of witnessing documents and minor judicial duties within Queensland.

A qualified Justice of the Peace has the same legal capacity as a Commissioner of Declarations (witnessing signatures on a variety of official documents and certifying copies of documents) additionally, you are able to issue summons and warrants, justice examination orders, executing minor bench duties and sureties as well as performing the other duties dependent on their level of appointment.

Successful completion of this course is not sufficient for appointment as a Justice of the Peace (Qualified) or Commissioner for Declarations. Therefore, you should ensure you meet the conditions set by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General (JAG) in order for you to meet the eligibility criteria prior to enrolling:

Please note, to become a Justice of the Peace (JP) or Commissioner for Declarations (C.Dec) you must be:

  • an Australian citizen
  • at least 18 years old
  • of good character
  • registered on the state electoral roll
  • must satisfy the Justice Department requirements to complete this qualification
