An accountant doesn’t just prepare tax returns to keep the tax man happy.  They also stay up to date on legislation and create and implement strategies to manage and maintain the finance within a business.  Businesses cannot stay afloat if they do not watch the money. Therefore a career in accounting is significant and highly responsible.

In your work in accounting, you’ll find yourself reconciling books, creating budgets, assessing projects to see if there is enough money to implement, and creating systems and strategies to keep business booming.  

Skills required will be professionalism, attention to detail, the ability to find loopholes in systems, organisation and the ability to communicate with, and in many cases become senior management.

Types of Courses

A degree or higher is usually required to enter into a career as an accountant. However starting out as an Accounting Clerk is a great entry position.  You’ll need Certificate III or higher to work as an Accounting Clerk.

Short Courses:

Short courses related to Accounting and Bookkeeping are very insightful and a great way to find out what’s involved in Accounting.  

Short Courses can last around 3 to 7 weeks and can focus in on a variety of niche topics.

Certificate II Course:

A Certificate II course in accounting or book-keeping will start to build on your knowledge in preparation for higher education.

Certificate III Courses:  

Usually, last around 12 months and do require work experience to pass.  You’ll learn everything you need to know to become an Accounting Clerk so that you can work professionally and adhere to legal requirements.  When you graduate, you’ll be fully qualified to work as an Accounting Clerk.
